Lehigh Valley Hospital now has the largest emergency department in the state. Take a virtual tour online.

As COVID-19 numbers continue to surge, Lehigh Valley Hospital added 100 beds to its emergency room on Monday.

When the ribbon was cut on the new $111 million emergency department, the department in the Salisbury Township hospital became the largest in the state.

“Our community deserves convenient access to quality emergency care, not only care that is efficient and advanced but warm and compassionate,” said Lehigh Valley Health Network CEO Brian Nester during a press conference broadcast on Facebook Live.

When the health network announced plans in July 2018 for an expanded emergency department, it had no idea the new ER would open during a global pandemic. But its design will give care providers new advantages to treat those with the disease.

The emergency department is built as a series of pods so that groups of rooms can be clustered together as needed to prevent the spread of diseases such as COVID-19, according to David Burmeister, the hospital’s chair of emergency medicine. Burmeister led about a half-hour walk-through tour of the new department on Facebook Live.

He said the department was designed to make the space as patient-friendly as possible.

“We made sure we put our feet in the shoes of our patients,” Burmeister said. “How would it be more convenient for them? How would it be better for them?”

For instance, each room has an iPad hook-up to make it easy to ask questions of nurses, doctors and specialists. Screens in the lobby with coded identifiers for each patient let visitors know when surgery is complete and when they can come back to see loved ones.

There are larger rooms and more bathrooms. For visitors, the café is near the entrance. Visitors can wait in a long-windowed hallway running the length of the building with plenty of phone charging ports when they need a quiet moment.

“It’s the product of an immense amount of planning and preparation,” Nester said of the emergency department.

Other interesting facts about the new emergency room:

There are two helicopter bays rather than one, each with its own fire suppression and fueling area.

There are three trauma bays with room for a fourth.

There are 35 observation rooms for patients who don’t need to be admitted but who aren’t quite ready to be sent home. Each of these rooms can be converted to a regular emergency room if needed during a patient surge.

The new ER is 130,000 square feet. The old 30,000-square-foot ER will now be converted into pediatric emergency room. As work continues on the conversion, children will be treated in a dedicated section of the new ER.

The emergency room has its own lab and its own MRI machine. There’s a CAT scanner and room for a second one.

About 90,000 adult and pediatric patients receive care in the Lehigh Valley Hospital emergency room annually.

The hospital now has more than 200 care spaces for emergency patients. There are 120 adult emergency care beds. (There were 47 beds.) The Children’s ER will go from 12 to 27 beds when it’s completed.

“This is a really, really important time for us at LVHN,” Burmeister said. “We tried the hardest we could to make this a community asset. This is your asset.”

4.5 miles of medical gas piping
