Conway ‘W.H.O. Crew’ makes a difference
Conway Elementary School’s “W.H.O. Crew” has been holding several collection drives to benefit the needy and homeless. W.H.O. stands for “We Help Others,” and the Crew is an after-school club that started about three years ago under first-grade teacher Brooke Brumback. Their motto is “It feels good to do good.” Students who want to help their community sign up and commit twice a month to meet after school for an hour to help plan and prepare a service drive. Donations go to Interfaith Community Services. One student, David Ramierez Aparicio, decided to spend his birthday money on shoes to donate to Interfaith, and later joined the W.H.O. Crew’s efforts. In October, the Crew held a sock drive and collected 340 pairs. The group also recently completed a Warmth Drive that brought in 57 items, including mittens, scarves, blankets and beanies. The latest drive, “Hope in Small Packages,” was collecting items for hygiene kits with the goal of 150 items. The students also plan to install a banner visible to the public so people can know when a collection drive is happening and can contribute needed items. Call (760) 432-2435.

District enrollment now including TK
The San Marcos Unified School District is opening school enrollment for all grades, including Transitional Kindergarten (or TK), for all students actively looking to return to or join the district. Opening school enrollment for all grades and to all students helps make the process more convenient for parents. “Shifting to an open enrollment date for all students, including those who are looking to transfer into our district, helps provide a more streamlined process for families and staff,” said Dr. Tiffany Campbell, Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services, in a statement. New this year to California is the Universal Transitional Kindergarten program announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom in July 2021. The goal is to allow all 4-year-olds in California the opportunity to attend TK by the 2025-26 school year. The state is phasing in TK classes, allowing schools to slowly expand their capacity each year. In the 2022-23 school year, TK is available to children who will have a fifth birthday between Sept. 2, 2022, and Feb. 2, 2023. The San Marcos district will offer half-day TK, with a morning or afternoon option, at every elementary school. The district will also be taking requests for inter-district transfer students who want to attend a district school. Visit smusd.org/enrollment.
