SEATTLE, WA — The second half of this year’s property taxes are due Nov. 2, and that deadline will not be extended, the county announced Friday. The county deferred the first round of payments earlier in the year, as the coronavirus pandemic and resulting closures first hit the economy.
The county said further extensions could land many communities in a precarious financial position.
“While the first half payment deadline was extended due to the then-emerging COVID-19 pandemic, an extension of the second half deadline could create substantial financial risk for many cities, counties, school districts, fire districts, hospital districts, and other special purpose districts,” the county wrote in a news release. “These jurisdictions rely heavily on the timely receipt of the year’s second installment of property tax revenue to make December debt service payments.”
The deadline applies to property owners who pay taxes directly, rather than through a mortgage lender. Payments received after Monday, Nov. 2, will accrue interest and late fees. Arrangements can be made via an online portal or by mail.
A payment plan program launched to assist taxpayers earlier in the year remains active. Property owners must sign an agreement and complete monthly payments through a third-party vendor. Residents can learn more about payment plan options on the King County website.
